New Year Resolutions

The New Year comes with new possibilities. Connecting to Possibility is a technique my team and I teach business leaders about on a daily basis. Below are some New Year’s Resolutions I gathered from business leaders I talk to in my coaching practice. I’ll be working with these leaders throughout the year, giving them the necessary tools to keep their resolutions. You may see a couple of resolutions from their list that resonate with you as well.

  • I resolve to stop basing everything I’m doing just my past results. While it’s good to learn from my past, I want to focus on the future I am working toward and the new options it gives me.
  • I want to focus on what I want, not on what I don’t want. Sounds simple, but I see so many of my peers getting stuck thinking only about what’s not working for them.
  • I will remain positive, even when people around me try to change that. Looking back at last year, I see all the time that was wasted when people put me in a bad mood. Staying positive makes me more productive, and it is its own reward.
  • I resolve to give 100% every day. Whatever my 100% is today is going to get better over time as I learn more and gain more experience. If I always give 100%, I’ll always be getting better.
  • My resolution is to stop saying, “I don’t have enough time.” Believing I don’t have enough time is a trick and when I fall for it, I just waste valuable time and focus trying to make this false statement true. I’ll concentrate on always doing my best with the time I have.
  • My resolution is to focus on the 90% my team did right, rather than waste so much time on the 10% that might have missed the mark. We can always improve, but I want our primary focus to be on riding the momentum of our positive upward trend and improving a little more each time.
  • I resolve to be more flexible. I need to be prepared for changes along the way.
  • My New Year’s Resolution is to keep in mind a motto my grandfather always said, “Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you are climbing it.” I’m always climbing higher.
  • If my future is inspiring me, I resolve to change it. No more wasting time working toward a goal that isn’t exciting to me. I will connect to the future I want and use that excitement to push forward.
  • I resolve to swim with the river, not against it.
  • My resolution is to take my goals and break them into smaller steps. This will help me by keeping focused on progress.
  • I resolve to tell myself in the mirror each morning that I am a strong, effective leader. As I keep that thought in mind, I will work to validate this identity.
  • My team and I resolved to work together to push the edge and reach further. We will support each other with regular check-ins. Sure, failure lives at the edge but so does victory, excitement and motivation. We’ll do it together.
  • I resolve to change the conversation with [another department]. Always assuming the worst before I even start working with them puts me in a negative place and sabotages me before even starting. I’ll start each new project with them on the right foot and thinking positively.
  • My goal for 2017 is to not be so hard on myself. I looked back on what I accomplished this past year. It was a lot. I see now that being successful by exceeding expectations isn’t a fluke – it’s a normal way I approach projects. It’s why I act on a day-to-day basis, and I’ll keep it up.
  • My team had a few setbacks on a project in the 3rd quarter. Since then, I’ve resolved to help them embrace what they learned and move forward. Owning small failures and growing from them are the key to big successes.
  • Whether you need to be more efficient, create team alignment that gets everyone working together, or create an ever-expanding cycle of success, New Year’s resolutions can help you connect with your Point B – the future you want to head towards. There is no time like the present to make progressive improvements.
